Biography

My name is Jake Carapella. I grew up in Canada and started writing as a boy, when I was 8 years old about Ron Artest and Lavor Postell when they were both at St. John's University, playing for the Red Storm. Around the same time, I wrote a story in school where myself, my brothers, and a few friends were all playing for Jeff Van Gundy's New York Knicks. I used classes in high school to enhance my journalism skills. My first job out of university was with the London Lightning of the Basketball Super League. At the time, they were coached by Michael Ray Richardson. For the Lightning, I was a statistician and also produced scouting reports. We won the then-NBL Canada championship in 2013, which was my first year working there.

I started writing in 2013 for sports opinion sites and in 2015, with the assistance of Hall of Fame columnist Peter Vecsey, was able to get in contact with Ben Osborne, who was at the time the Editor-in-Chief of SLAM Magazine. I wrote three features for SLAM in the winter of 2015, which were featured on their website. One of the pieces, on Kobe Bryant, is in the Notes and Sources section of Roland Lazenby's biography Showboat: The Life of Kobe Bryant.

In 2022, I graduated with a BA in Journalism from SUNY New Paltz, in New York's hudson valley region, and was named to the Lambda Pi Eta National Honor's Society of Communications in 2022, graduating with a 3.29 GPA. While at New Paltz, I helped cover all of our Division III sports programs, doing previews, game recaps, and transcribing.

After New Paltz, I did local reporting in Dutchess County before going to Boca Raton, FL to take a job at Lynn University (Division II, Sunshine State Conference) as Assistant Director of Athletic Communication. At Lynn, I did website management and covered games. After Lynn, I worked at the NBA in Secaucus, NJ, producing the continuous game feeds for NBA League Pass. I finished my contract at the NBA in May of 2023 and since, have been writing about the NBA again. Writing has always been therapeutic for me and I love to tell a story. All of my skills that I have cultivated over the years make me a great candidate for any organization or publication. I hope you enjoy my writing.
