Los Angeles Lakers’ star Anthony Davis and fellow Kentucky alum and New York Knick star Karl-Anthony Towns made history on Friday night in games in which both led their teams to big home victories.
Davis’ 35 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists (11-for-18) propelled the Lakers to a 123-116 win, a game that they trailed 48-26 early in the second quarter. Davis played aggressive, working out of the post on offense, getting to the line, and running the floor for transition finishes. Austin Reaves (8-for-12) scored 26, while LeBron James scored 21 on 7-for-13 shooting and also had 8 assists and 4 rebounds.
Kevin Durant (11-for-17) led the Suns with 30 points and dished out six assists. The Suns made 17-of-37 three-pointers, eight of them coming in the first quarter.
Towns (5-for-11) scored 21 points and pulled in 15 rebounds in the 123-98 Knick win over the Indiana Pacers. He became the first Knick player with at least 20 points and 15 rebounds in their home debut. Jalen Brunson scored a game-high 26 points, Josh Hart (8-for-15) had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Mikal Bridges bounced back with a solid shooting night (21 points, 8-for-12). It was a morale-boosting win for the Knicks after getting blown out in Boston in their season opener.
To say that Pacer guard Tyrese Haliburton struggled would be an understatement, as the All-Star guard went 0-for-8 from the field, including seven long distance misses.
The Orlando Magic, led by Franz Wagner’s 29 points, improved to 2-0 with a 116-101 home win over the Brooklyn Nets. Cam Thomas scored 24 points for the Nets.
The Toronto Raptors, led by Scottie Barnes’ 27 points, rebounded from their 30-point loss in their season opener to defeat the Philadelphia 76ers 115-107.
The Atlanta Hawks, led by Trae Young’s 38 points, held off the Charlotte Hornets 125-120. LaMelo Ball put up 34 for the Hornets.
Donovan Mitchell and Dean Wade led the Cleveland Cavaliers with 19 points apiece as the team improved to 2-0 with a 113-101 home win over their division rival Detroit Pistons. Cade Cunningham scored 33 points in the defeat.
All five Houston Rocket starters finished in double figures, led by Jalen Green’s 22, to comfortably defeat the Memphis Grizzlies at home 128-108. Ja Morant scored 24 points for the Grizzlies.
Coby White’s 35 points led the Chicago Bulls past the Milwaukee Bucks 133-122, overcoming Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 38 points and 11 rebounds and Damian Lillard’s 28 points.
Buddy Hield (7-for-9 from downtown) led the Golden State Warriors with 27 points as they blew out the Utah Jazz at the Delta Center 127-86.
Brandon Ingram (21 points, 8-for-20) hit a tough fall away jumper over Anfernee Simons with 4.9 seconds left and Zion Williamson blocked Simons’ driving attempt as the buzzer sounded to seal the New Orleans Pelicans’ 105-103 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. Williamson struggled from the field (4-for-15) and the free-throw line (8-for-14) but did have 11 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 blocks in addition to his 16 points. Both teams meet again on Sunday in Portland.
