10/30 Recap: Bronny’s First Career Points in Cleveland; Karl-Anthony Towns’ 44 Lifts Knicks; Warriors Get Better of Pelicans Again

Bronny James scored his first career points on a corner jump shot with 2:04 remaining in the Lakers’ 134-110 loss to the Cavaliers in Cleveland. It was surreal and special moment for the Akron native, who received a loud ovation from the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse crowd. LeBron James’ 26 points (9-for-13) led the visitors while Anthony Davis put up 22 points and 13 rebounds and rookie Dalton Knect scored 18 points in 22 minutes. Evan Mobley’s 25 points led the Cavaliers, while Donovan Mitchell scored 24 and Jarrett Allen scored 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Caris LeVert added 16 points off the bench. The loss placed the Lakers at 3-2, while the Cavaliers (5-0) are now the Eastern Conference’s only unbeaten team.


Around the League


Tre Mann (27 points, 10-for-19), Cody Martin (25 points, 9-for-11), and Grant Williams (17 points, 5-for-6) scored a combined 69 points off the Charlotte Hornet (2-2) bench in a 138-133 home win over the Toronto Raptors (1-4). Nick Richards (24 points, 14 rebounds) led the starters while LaMelo Ball scored 19. R.J. Barrett (31 points, 10-for-18) and Gradey Dick (30 points, 11-for-17) were the top performers for the Raptors.


Pascal Siakam’s top of the arc triple with 6.1 seconds left in overtime got the Indiana Pacers (2-3) the win at home as they handed the Boston Celtics (4-1) their first defeat of the season 135-132. Siakam (6-for-8 from downtown) scored 29 points and added 11 rebounds and 5 assists, while Bennedict Mathurin starred with 30 points (9-for-17) and 11 rebounds in 43 minutes off the bench. Jayson Tatum’s 37 points led the Celtics but he and Jalen Brown (25 points) combined to shoot 21-of-55 from the field and 6-of-29 from distance.


Jaden Ivey’s 23 points (9-for-17) and Cade Cunningham’s 22 points (6-for-15) led the Detroit Pistons to a 105-95 win in Philadelphia, for their first win of the season (1-4). Former 76er Tobias Harris scored 18 points and added 14 rebounds. The 76ers (1-3), still playing without Joel Embiid and Paul George, were led by Tyrese Maxey’s 32 points and 7 assists, though Maxey shot just 12-for-25 from the field and 2-for-10 from distance. Rookie Jared McCain scored 12 off the bench.


Dennis Schroder’s efficient night (33 points, 11-for-14, 6-for-9 from downtown) led the Brooklyn Nets to their second win of the season (2-3), 119-106 in Memphis. Cam Thomas (19 points), and Zaire Williams (17 points off the bench) had big contributions. For the Grizzlies (2-3), Jaren Jackson Jr. (10-for-12) was the high man with 30 points while Ja Morant had an off night, going just 5-for-16 for 14 points.


Bilal Coulibaly’s 27 points (11-for-14) and Jordan Poole’s 24 points (6-for-17) enabled the Washington Wizards (2-2) to get a comfortable 133–120 home win over the Atlanta Hawks (2-3). The Wizards overcame 35 points and 15 assists from Trae Young (12-for-28) and Jalen Johnson’s 21 points and 17 rebounds. Young is shooting just 40 percent on the season.


The Chicago Bulls (3-2) earned a 102-99 home victory over the Orlando Magic (3-2) behind Coby White’s 21 points (8-for-16) and Josh Giddey’s 20 points and 11 assists (four three-pointers). Nikola Vucevic added 18 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 assists. Paolo Banchero (31 points, 7 rebounds) was the top performer for the Magic.


Karl-Anthony Towns’ monstrous 44-point, 13-rebound performance (17-for-25, four triples) got the New York Knicks to .500 (2-2) with a 116-107 win over the Miami Heat (2-2) down south. Jalen Brunson put up 22 points but struggled from the field (6-for-18). The Knicks overcame Tyler Herro’s 34 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds. Herro shot a blistering 8-for-15 from downtown and 12-for-20 from the field.


Lu Dort’s 20 points was tops for the Oklahoma City Thunder as they improved to 4-0 with a 105-93 home victory over the San Antonio Spurs (1-3). On an off night for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (18 points despite 7-for-20 from the field and 2-for-10 from downtown), Chet Holmgren’s 19 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals, and 2 assists picked up the slack. Harrison Barnes (18 points, 7-for-12), and Jeremy Sochan (17 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 7-for-16) were the top performers for the Spurs while Victor Wembanyama was 1-for-5 with 6 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 27 minutes. Chris Paul put up 14 points, 9 assists, and 5 rebounds in the loss.


The Golden State Warriors improved to 4-1 as they defeated the New Orleans Pelicans (2-3) for the second time in as many nights with a 104-89 win. Buddy Hield (21 points, 8-for-19, four triples) led a Warrior team that once again played hard and together in the absence of Stephen Curry. Trayce Jackson-Davis (15 points, 9 rebounds, 7-for-9) played a great game and Draymond Green played very sound defense on Zion Williamson. Williamson had a night to forget, going just 5-for-20 and finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds. He was not finishing with his usual success around the basket and was missing on jump shots. The second night of a back-to-back, he looked fatigued. Brandon Ingram was just 5-for-11 for 14 points, and the team was led by Jordan Hawkins’ 23. Guard Javonte Green gave the Pelicans solid defensive minutes and hustle off the bench. C.J. McCollum did not play as he is dealing with a right adductor injury.


Anfernee Simons’ 25 points (10-for-24) led the Portland Trail Blazers (2-3) to a 106-105 win over the Los Angeles Clippers (2-2). Deandre Ayton (15 points, 12 rebounds, 7-for-15) and Deni Avdija (13 points, 10 rebounds) had double-doubles for the Blazers. Scoot Henderson (14 points, 6 assists, 5-for-8) was solid off the bench in 24 minutes. James Harden (6-for-18) shot poorly but finished with 19 points, 10 assists, and 5 rebounds, while Norman Powell led the Clipper effort with 30 points (11-for-22, 5-for-10 from downtown).
