Jaylen Brown’s transition triple with 1:16 remaining gave the Boston Celtics enough of a cushion at home to defeat the Minnesota Timberwolves 107-105, the Cleveland Cavaliers won their 17th game with a 14-point home win, and the Brooklyn Nets upended the Sacramento Kings from Golden 1 Center in Sunday action.
The Celtics, led in the game by Brown’s 29 points (10-for-18, 7-for-10 from downtown) had an 11-point advantage, 84-73, going into the fourth. Wolves’ rookie guard Rob Dillingham played a great game off the bench with 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting in 16 minutes, and scored eight of his 14 in the final frame.
After Brown’s three-point make, Julius Randle made one of two from the line and converted a tough layup with 33.1 seconds on the clock to cut the deficit to two, 107-105. After Brown missed a three, the Celtic star played great defense on the final possession, forcing Anthony Edwards to his left and forcing him to give the ball up. The ball swung around to Naz Reid, whose attempt from the top of the arc hit front rim. The Celtics improved to 14-3 with the win while the Timberwolves are now 8-8.
Edwards (28 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 9-for-21) led his team in defeat while Randle put up 23 points and 6 rebounds. Rudy Gobert grabbed 20 rebounds. Jayson Tatum scored 26 points and had 8 rebounds on 8-for-21 shooting. The Celtics shot 56 threes, making 21.
The Cavaliers scored 38 first quarter points on their way to a 122-108 home win against the Toronto Raptors.
Donovan Mitchell led the starting group with 26 points (10-for-18, 5-for-9 from the deep) while Ty Jerome scored 26 off the bench. Jarrett Allen added 23 points and 13 rebounds on 10-for-14 from the field and Evan Mobley posted a double-double himself with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Darius Garland shot 4-for-7 from distance for 16 points.
For the 4-13 Raptors, Scottie Barnes had a tough night, shooting just 5-for-14 (1-for-6 from downtown) for 18 points. He added 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Gradey Dick scored 18 but shot just 6-for-17. Jakob Poeltl pulled down 19 rebounds.
The Cavaliers’ home record remains unblemished at 10-0.
In Sacramento, Cam Thomas put up a game-high 34 (11-for-22 from the field, 4-for-10 from distance) to lead the Nets in a 108-103 win. The Nets, 7-10, were playing without Dennis Schroder due to a sore right ankle but received 18 points off the bench from 20-year-old Noah Clowney and 16 points from Cam Johnson. The Nets led by 19 points in the first half.
The Kings, who fell below .500 with the loss (8-9), got 31 points from De’Aaron Fox (10-for-16). Keegan Murray put up 21 points and 8 rebounds, DeMar DeRozan 18 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists (7-for-18), and Domantas Sabonis had a great all-around game with 13 points, 18 rebounds, and 7 assists.
