Stephen Pagliuca, a minority owner in the Boston Celtics, reached an agreement on Saturday to purchase the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun. The price tag is $325 million.
The move also includes a pledge to build a $100 million practice facility for the franchise that will begin play in Boston in 2027.
In 2003, the Sun were bought by the Mohegan Tribe and moved to Connecticut from Orlando, Fla. The franchise currently plays their home games at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. From 2003-2008, the Sun made the playoffs, and in 2004 and 2005 lost in the WNBA Finals. They made the postseason in 2011 and 2012, and every season from 2017-2024. They currently stand at 5-21, sixth place in the WNBA’s Eastern Conference.
In 2026, expansion WNBA franchises in Portland and Toronto will begin play, while in 2028, 2029, and 2030 teams will begin play in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia.
With its movement to bigger markets, the WNBA is expanding its reach and things are heading in a positive direction. The incoming Boston franchise’s practice facility is another big step in the right direction as far as getting players and organizations what they need to reach their fullest potential.
