Flau’jae Johnson’s Double-Double Leads LSU Past UCLA in Sweet 16

The LSU women's basketball team is heading back to the Elite Eight. Waiting for them could be a rematch with last year's NCAA tournament final foe Iowa.

In a close contest, the Tigers' defense tightened up down the stretch to secure the 78-69 win Saturday afternoon over UCLA in Albany, NY. Flau'jae Johnson put up a monster double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds, along with two blocks. Her denial of 6 foot, 4 inch Angela Dugalic with 16 seconds left helped clinch the victory. Aneesha Morrow, who scored 17 points, and Hailey Van Lith, made free throws in the last 12 seconds. Angel Reese, who fouled out with 31.5 seconds left, finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Londynn Jones, Lauren Betts, and Gabriela Jaquez, the latter of whom came off the bench, each finished with 14 points for the Bruins. Betts had a game-high 17 rebounds.

While LSU shot the ball well (45.6 percent), UCLA shot a paltry 35.7 percent, including just seven out of 32 from three-point range. The Tigers also won the turnover battle, committing 13 to the Bruins' 19.

The LSU women are heading to the Elite Eight for the 10th time, looking to get back to the national championship game, which they won in convincing fashion over the Hawkeyes last year, 102-85.

The Bruins started the season 14-0 and finished 24-5, losing in the Pac-12 tournament 80-70 to USC. They will graduate five players.
