Gilgeous-Alexander Scores 52 in Loss, Knicks Get Big Win Against Nuggets, Edwards Leads Wolves vs. Suns

11 games were on Wednesday’s NBA slate, with another big time performance from Oklahoma City’s superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander headlining the action, Jalen Brunson coming up big with 30 points and 15 assists against the Denver Nuggets, and the Timberwolves getting an 8-point road win in Phoenix thanks to 33 points from Anthony Edwards and 28 from Julius Randle.

The Thunder, 37-9, fell 116-109 to the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco, with the Warriors, led by Andrew Wiggins’ 27 points (10-for-17, 5-for-8 from deep), outscoring the top-seeded Thunder 96-75 over the last three quarters of the contest. Stephen Curry was 6-for-15 (5-for-10 from downtown) for 21 points, while big man Kevon Looney contributed 18 points and 4 blocks off the bench.

The story of the game though was Gilgeous-Alexander, pouring in 52 points (4 assists, 3 rebounds, 16-for-29, 18-for-21 from the line) in 39 minutes. The star guard has eclipsed 30 points 26 times this season, had 40 or more five times, and his 52 point barrage on Wednesday is two off of his career-high 54 points that he scored on January 22 in a 123-114 win over the Utah Jazz at Paycom Center. On Wednesday, Gilgeous-Alexander was aided by Jalen Williams’ 26 points and 7 rebounds (12-for-26 shooting) and Isaiah Joe’s 17 off the bench. The issue though was the Thunder supporting cast, as starters Isaiah Hartenstein, Lu Dort, and Cason Wallace were just a combined 5-for-23 shooting. Hartenstein did contribute 18 rebounds though, the reason for the Thunder’s 50-42 rebounding advantage.

With the win, the Warriors at 24-23 (11th) are tied with the Sacramento Kings (10th) fighting for the final play-in spot.

Brunson’s 30 points and 15 assists (10-for-16, 7-for-7 from the line) keyed the Knicks’ 122-112 win at MSG against the Denver Nuggets. OG Anunoby added 23 points (9-for-15, 5-for-7 from deep), Josh Hart 15, Mikal Bridges 13, and Karl-Anthony Towns 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Jamal Murray’s 33 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds led the Nuggets (13-for-25 shooting), while Nikola Jokic put up 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists on 6-for-15 shooting. Aaron Gordon added 15 points and 6 rebounds (6-for-7 shooting), while Russell Westbrook went 5-for-11 with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. The Knicks are 32-16, 3rd in the Eastern Conference, with the win while the Nuggets are 28-19, 4th in the west.

Edwards’ 33 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 blocks, and 2 steals on 11-for-20 (3-for-8 from downtown) led the way for the Timberwolves in a big road win against the Phoenix Suns. Julius Randle added 28 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals on 10-for-16 shooting (8-for-10 from the line), and Nickeil Alexander-Walker played a strong game off the bench with 23 points on 8-for-14 from the field (5-for-10 from deep).

Kevin Durant (13-for-20, 4-for-8 from downtown) led the Suns with 33 points himself, 7 assists, 4 blocks, and 2 steals. Devin Booker scored 28 points on 11-for-19 shooting and had 8 assists, while Bradley Beal was 6-for-10 shooting in 25 minutes off the bench for 17 points and 6 assists.

The 26-21 Timberwolves, winners of four straight, hold a half game lead on the Dallas Mavericks for the 7th spot in the Western Conference. The Suns, meanwhile, are 24-22 and 9th in the west, 1.5 games behind the Timberwolves.
