Golden State Warriors Trade for Philadelphia 76ers’ Hield to Help Fill Void Left By Thompson Departure

The Golden State Warriors have traded for another shooter in the wake of Klay Thompson’s departure to Dallas, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Thursday afternoon, the Warriors completed a sign-and-trade for the Philadelphia 76ers’ Buddy Hield. The acquisition of Hield gives the Warriors three new faces thus far going into next season - DeAnthony Melton and Kyle Anderson were also recently signed via free agency.

Hield is by no means a better shooter than Thompson - Steph Curry and Thompson providing the most potent shooting backcourt in NBA history for the past 13 NBA seasons on their way to four championships. Hield though is a nice replacement, 31-years-old and a career 40 percent shooter from long distance. He averaged 12.1 points on 39 percent from three this past season in 84 games - 52 with the Indiana Pacers and 32 for the 76ers.

The Freeport, Bahamas native’s best season came in 2018-2019 with the Sacramento Kings when he averaged 20.7 points on 46 percent from the field and 43 percent from three-point range. That season, he started all 82 games and started 73 of 80 games in 2022-2023. For the Warriors, he likely will come off the bench as Brandon Podziemski figures to start. Still, Hield gives the Warriors another outside threat.

With the additions of Hield, Melton, and Anderson, the Warriors may not be finished making moves as Andrew Wiggins has long been speculated as trade bait. They also are thin on the interior with just Trayce Jackson-Davis and Kevon Looney and could make a move for size.
