Hawks Win Home Thriller vs. Lakers; Celtics Get Bucks in Boston; Jazz Trounce Trail Blazers by 42

Seven games were on the NBA schedule on Friday, highlighted by a thriller in Atlanta.

The hosting Atlanta Hawks and visiting Los Angeles Lakers delivered a treat to the State Farm Arena crowd on Friday, with the Hawks taking the game in overtime by a score of 134-132.

In a game that included performances befitting of all-stars - LeBron James had 39 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds on 14-for-26 and 6-for-11 from deep, Anthony Davis put up 38 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists on 15-for-27, and Trae Young scored 31 points and dished out 20 assists - the game went into an extra period where the Lakers saw victory slip away.

The Hawks were able to get possession late in the period after James tipped the ball out of bounds on a deflection from a jump ball. Young promptly hit the game-winning bucket, a three, with eight seconds left, and James missed badly on a pull-up triple with four seconds remaining.

Young’s triple was preceded by an Anthony Davis-Dyson Daniels jump ball, caused by Daniels after the Lakers inbounded the ball up 132-131. The expectation was that Davis would be fouled and head to the line with a chance for the Lakers to potentially take a three-point advantage, but Davis was too cavalier with the ball upon catching it, allowing Daniels to get his hands on the ball and cause the tie up.

In a game where 75 triples were attempted (the Lakers were 16-for-35 and the Hawks 17-for-40), the home team smartly used defensive mismatches to their advantage to score inside, with De’Andre Hunter (26 points off the bench (9-for-15, 5-for-7 from downtown), Young (9-for-25, 5-for-13), and Daniels (11 points, 5-for-8) going off the dribble for easier buckets late. Bodgan Bogdanovic (20 points, 7-13, 4-for-9) contributed with Hunter to 65 Hawk bench points. The Lakers, conversely, got 17 points from D’Angelo Russell (8 points, 3-for-9) and Max Christie (9 points, 3-for-6) to make up all of their bench points. Dalton Knecht (14 points, 6-for-11), Gabe Vincent (12 points, 5 assists, 5-for-11) and Rui Hachimura (12 points, 9 rebounds, 5-for-6) rounded out the scoring from the starting five, with Vincent’s energy and effort particularly impressive.

The loss, dropping the Lakers to 12-11, is a tough one coming off of two blowout losses (109-80 to Minnesota and 134-93 to Miami). A win would have been a good morale boost for a team that sorely needs one.

The Hawks, now 13-11, have won six straight, Friday’s victory continuing their momentum and again proving that they can play against any and all stars. They are a young group with talent that plays well together, with good interior play (Onyeka Okongwu and Clint Capela provide rebounding and toughness) and wings that can score. Young has taken on a leadership role and gotten everyone involved.

With Young’s performance, he became, per Atlanta Hawks PR, the first player in franchise history to have at least 30 points and 20 assists in a single game, and is the first player leaguewide since 1979-80 to have 30-plus points and 20-plus assists with five threes.

The Boston Celtics improved to 19-4 with a 111-105 win over the Milwaukee Bucks (11-11) despite 30 points and 11 rebounds (13-for-25) from Giannis Antetokounmpo and 31 points (12-for-25, 4-for-12) from Damian Lillard. Jayson Tatum led the way with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists on 12-for-20 (4-for-10 from downtown), while Jaylen Brown scored 25 on 10-for-21. Sam Hauser played well off the bench with 16 points on 4-for-8 from downtown. Jrue Holiday added 20 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds on 7-for-14 for the home team that was playing without Kristaps Porzingis. The Celtics impress every night with their ability to roll out whomever and play without any drop off. They are, as the old saying goes, a well oiled machine.

In Portland, the Utah Jazz (5-17) snapped their five game losing streak with a 141-99 demolition of the 8-15 Trail Blazers. The Jazz, who led 33-17 after one quarter, scored 34, 35, and 39 in the ensuing quarters.

John Collins (20 points, 7-for-10) led the starting charge for a team that had nine players finish in double figures. Walker Kessler had a 13-point, 17-rebound double-double, while rookie and former UCLA star Johnny Juzang erupted for 22 points in 26 minutes on 8-for-14. Keyonte George was 6-for-13 for 17 points, and Collin Sexton 6-for-14 with 16 points and 7 assists. The Jazz shot 55 percent from the field and 44 percent (14-for-32) from deep.

Jerami Grant led the Blazers with 19 points on 6-for-11, and Delano Banton also scored 19 (on 7-for-17 off the bench). Anfernee Simons was 6-for-15 for 14 points, while Shaedon Sharpe was just 3-for-12 for 10 points.

The Blazers were outrebounded 61-34.
