Jalen Brunson has agreed to a four-year extension to stay in New York, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Brunson’s new deal is worth $156.5 million over four years.
Brunson’s new contract is a far cry from the five-year, $269 million deal he could have signed next offseason, but it is one that allows the Knicks to maintain cap flexibility. He will make $37.1 million each year over the next four seasons.
The All-Star guard will be eligible for a four-year, $323 million extension in 2028 or a five-year, $418 million deal in 2029.
Brunson’s agreement is rather unprecedented, a player taking much less in the short term to help his team improve. Already this offseason
the Knicks brought back defensive ace O.G. Anunoby and traded for emerging Brooklyn Nets’ wing Mikal Bridges.
After losing in ther conference semifinals to the Indiana Pacers, the moves made by the Knicks have thrust them into legitimate contention to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals. Brunson taking a cap-friendly deal helps that, too.
