One of the NBA’s all-time broadcasting legends has passed away.
Al McCoy, who was the Phoenix Suns’ radio play-by-play announcer from 1972-2023, died on Saturday at age 91.
The first broadcast of McCoy’s career was against the ABA’s Utah Stars in a preseason contest. In 2023, he joined Suns’ television -by-play man Kevin Ray and color commentator Eddie Johnson for one final broadcast.
McCoy was inducted into the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2004, received the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Curt Gowdy Award in 2007, and was inducted into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. He was inducted into the Suns’ Ring of Honor in 2017.
McCoy was the longest-tenured team broadcaster in league history, someone whom commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement on Saturday “was a master of his craft”.
RIP, Al McCoy.
