Former NBA veteran Mitchell Wiggins has passed away at the age of 64, his daughter announced on social media.
Wiggins was drafted 23rd overall in the 1983 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers. He was traded to the Chicago Bulls for Sidney Lowe, and spent the 1983-1984 season as a Bull. Wiggins played for the Houston Rockets from 1984-1987 and 1989-1990, with stops in between in the Eastern League and the Continental Basketball Association.
Wiggins’ last NBA season was 1991-1992 with the Philadelphia 76ers, before returning to the CBA once again and then embarking on an international career that took him to Greece, Philippines, and France. He led the Greek League in scoring twice and was a three-time Greek League all-star.
Mitchell was married Marita Payne, who was born in Barbados but attended high school in Toronto, Ontario. Payne-Wiggins holds the Canadian record in the 400-meter.
Their son Andrew, of course, was the top pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, and their other son Nick attended Wichita State University and currently plays in Indonesia.
Mitchell had dealt with recent health issues that forced Andrew to be away from the Golden State Warriors and miss time.
Rest In Peace, Mitchell Wiggins.
