NBA Trade Deadline: Few Big Names, But Good Moves Made by Contenders

The NBA's trade deadline came and went on Thursday, with a flurry of moves. The bigger names we might have expected - Dejounte Murray, for one - stayed put, while contending teams made moves to bolster their championship chances. The deals that were made Thursday were as follows:

  • The Toronto Raptors acquired center Kelly Olynyk and guard Ochai Agbaji from the Utah Jazz in exchange for Otto Porter Jr., Kira Lewis. and a 2024 first-round pick. The Raptors also traded Dennis Schroder and Thaddeus Young to the Brooklyn Nets for Spencer Dinwiddie and Dennis Smith Jr.

  • The Oklahoma City Thunder acquired Gordon Hayward from the Charlotte Hornets for Tre Mann, Davis Bertans, Vasilije Micic and two future first-round picks.

  • The Philadelphia 76ers traded guard Danuel House Jr. and a 2024 second-round pick to the Detroit Pistons. The move, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, gives the 76ers additional cap room if they wish to go after Kyle Lowry in the buyout market, if he is bought out by the Hornets. Lowry was dealt the Hornets for Terry Rozier on Jan. 23. The 76ers also traded Patrick Beverley to the Milwaukee Bucks for Cameron Payne and a 2027 second-round pick, and traded Jaden Springer to the Boston Celtics for a second-round pick.

  • The Dallas Mavericks acquired Daniel Gafford from the Washington Wizards for center Richaun Holmes and a 2024 first-round pick. The Mavericks also traded Grant Williams, Seth Curry, and a 2027 first-round pick to the Hornets for PJ Washington.

  • The New York Knicks traded Quentin Grimes, Malachi Flynn, Evan Fournier, Ryan Arcidiacono, and two future second-round picks to the Detroit Pistons for Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks.

  • The Boston Celtics traded Dalano Banton to the Portland Trail Blazers for a second-round pick.

  • Milwaukee Bucks traded Robin Lopez and cash to the Sacramento Kings.

  • The San Antonio Spurs traded Doug McDermott to the Indiana Pacers for Marcus Morris and a 2029 second-round pick.

  • The Golden State Warriors traded Cory Joseph to the Indiana Pacers for a second-round pick.

  • A three-team deal occurred between the Phoenix Suns, Brooklyn Nets, and Memphis Grizzlies. The Suns acquired Royce O'Neale from the Brooklyn Nets and David Roddy from the Memphis Grizzlies. The Nets acquired Keita Bates-Diop and Jordan Goodwin, and the Grizzlies received Yuta Watuable and Chimezie Metu.

  • The Pacers released Cory Joseph, the Pistons released Killian Hayes and Joe Harris, and the Raptors are planning to waive Spencer Dinwiddie.

The Knicks greatly improved their roster over the last two months, first with the acquisition of OG Anunoby at the end of December, and now with the deal for Bogdanovic and Burks. Burks, a knockdown shooter, returns to the team that he spent the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons with, and Bogdanovic also gives the Knicks more scoring. They now have a solid collection of defense and shooting, along with an MVP candidate in Jalen Brunson and another all-star in Julius Randle. A major short term loss, though, is Anunoby, who, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, will miss at least three weeks after surgery to remove a loose bone fragment in his right elbow.

The 76ers, in dealing for Hield, get some additional perimeter scoring along with Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris.

The Thunder, getting Hayward, get a scorer who will provide veteran leadership and scoring off of the bench when he is healthy. In 25 games this season, he is averaging 14.5 points on 46.8 percent shooting.

The acquisitions of Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington make Dallas a much improved team. Currently 28-23 (eighth in the Western Conference), the Mavericks get more athletic inside and better interior defense with Gafford. He is an active, live body who is a presence at the rim.

The Raptors, in dealing Shroder and potentially getting rid of Dinwiddie, are signalling a full rebuild. It is an overdue rebuild that will allow Masai Ujiri to put talent around Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett. For the time being, Olynyk gives them much needed shooting.

O'Neale and Roddy, for the Suns, give them perimeter defense and toughness. In the case of O'Neale, he is a great small ball lineup fit and gives the Suns more size and defense on the perimeter than what Josh Okogie does, despite Okogie's ability to also make three-pointers.

Expect teams like the Lakers and Nuggets to be in the mix for some free agents that could help. Killian Hayes, released by the Pistons, could be a good option as a reclamation project, going somewhere where he could try and get his career on track. His best season of his career was last season, where he averaged 10.3 points per game, playing 76 games. Dinwiddie would be a great fit in both situations, particularly in Denver where the loss of Bruce Brown is still felt.
