Former NBA commissioner David Stern has passed away at the age of 77, it was announced today. Stern died on Wednesday in Manhattan, hospitalized for a few weeks after undergoing emergency surgery following a brain hemorrhage that he suffered in mid-December.
Stern became NBA commissioner in 1984, and held that position until 2014. Under his watch, the NBA became a global game, shifting from tape-delayed NBA Finals games to a global league that saw an influx of revenue and worldwide talent. Without a doubt, the NBA wouldn't be where it is today if not for his vision and work.
Rest in Peace, David Stern.
