Along with Victor Wembanyama’s 50 points on Wednesday night in a win over the Washington Wizards, Giannis Antetokounmpo poured in 59 to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 127-120 overtime win over the Detroit Pistons and Karl-Anthony Towns scored 46 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in a 124-123 New York Knick loss to the Chicago Bulls. The Knicks came back from a 22-point deficit, but Jalen Brunson missed a 15-footer at the buzzer.
Antetokounmpo’s 59 (and 14 rebounds and 7 assists) in the Bucks’ home contest was the second straight overtime game for the Pistons, who defeated the Miami Heat in overtime on Tuesday.
Per ESPN, the outputs from Wembanyama, Antetokounmpo and Towns marked the first time in league history that players 6’11 or taller each scored 45 points in a game on the same night.
Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated an undermanned but game Philadelphia 76er team 114-106 to become just the sixth team in league history to begin a season 13-0. Darius Garland (10-for-16) led the Cavs with 25 points, while Donovan Mitchell put up 23 points, 13 rebounds, and 9 assists on 9-for-21 shooting. Per the NBA, the 2015-2016 Warriors (24-0), 2002-2003 Dallas Mavericks (14-0), 1993-1994 Houston Rockets (15-0), 1957-1958 Boston Celtics (14-0) and 1948-1949 Washington Capitols (15-0) are the other teams to get off to 13-0 starts. The Warriors and Rockets both went on to win the championship.
For the 76ers (2-9), rookie Jared McCain was terrific in defeat, with 34 points and 10 assists on 12-for-26 from the field while hitting nearly 50 percent from downtown (6-for-13). Kelly Oubre Jr. added 20 for a Sixer team that was without Joel Embiid and Paul George and continues to be without Tyrese Maxey.
