Victor Wembanyama bested his previous career-high by 10 points on Wednesday night in the San Antonio Spurs’ (6-6) win over the Washington Wizards (2-8), erupting for 50 points in the 139-130 victory. As a rookie last season, Wembanyama put up 38 points and 10 assists in just his fifth career game (against the Phoenix Suns), and scored 40 points with 20 assists and 7 rebounds on March 29, 2024 against the New York Knicks.
Wednesday night, the 20-year-old in addition to his 50 had 6 assists and 3 blocks and shot 18-for-29 from the field, 8-for-16 from deep and 6-for-9 from the charity stripe. He did it all in 32 minutes, while putting up 42 points in his first 22 minutes of the game. Devin Vassell scored 17 points, while Chris Paul dished 11 assists to go along with 9 points. For the Wizards, Jordan Poole had a night himself, with 42 points on 15-for-22 from the field and 6-for-9 from downtown.
Wembanyama’s 49th and 50th points came on a wing jump shot with 8:49 remaining in the game to put the Spurs up 115-98. He was subbed out of the game with 7:30 remaining, the Wizards getting back in the game and cutting the deficit to as slim as five, 135-130, with 23.1 seconds remaining. Poole scored 15 fourth quarter points to keep the Wizards within striking distance.
With the outburst, Wembanyama joins LeBron James, Brandon Jennings, Devin Booker, and Kevin Porter Jr. as 20 year olds to score 50 in an NBA game, per StatMuse. At 20 years and 314 days old, Wembanyama is the fourth youngest to get to the 50-point mark.
