Well Deserved Extension in New York for Tom Thibodeau

The New York Knicks inked Tom Thibodeau to a three-year contract extension on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The deal carries Thibodeau through 2027-2028.

For the Knicks, the deal is a reward for a coach that has brought them both continuity and success in his time in New York. Thibodeau is the 14th head coach the Knicks have had since the new millennium, and his new deal will give him the longest tenure of any head coach in that span. Jeff Van Gundy lasted seven years, from 1996-2002, but since 2015, no coach has lasted more than two seasons - the organization rifling through the likes of Derek Fisher, David Fizdale, and Jeff Hornacek.

Thibodeau is 175-143 with the Knicks since he took over in 2020. Over the past three seasons, the team has seen incremental success, from 37 wins to 47 wins to 50 wins, reaching the Eastern Conference Finals this past season.

The team already this off-season has re-signed star guard Jalen Brunson and traded for forward Mikal Bridges. Locking Thibodeau in for the next three seasons is a crucial piece to ensuring the team’s success going forward.
